Why Business Of Birth?

by Heidi

I remember it clearly.  We sat in our hotel room, excited from our first day of doula training with the homework to write down how much our doula rate should be and report back the following day. How much we should charge each client for our doula package and it was a bit overwhelming but we had stars in our eyes! This would be amazing for our family, we could cover the mortgage or groceries for the month for our family. Perhaps it could be extra to pay for a much needed vacation or simply give us breathing room in your home budgets.

We couldn’t believe that our passion could be combined with actually making a sustainable living for our family!  We finished our weekend training and headed home gushing over learning the hip squeeze and stages of labour, learning how to serve our clients in the most beautiful way during pregnancy, birth and postpartum.  I loved our doula training, but I soon realized we needed more education.  Starting a business is no joke and there are a lot of hoops to jump through.  From registering our business, finding insurance, creating websites and learning how to market ourselves in the community and online.  Whoa! It was a lot. After a year of pushing through we decided it was time to step it up a notch.

Business training.  Professional education to create the vision we had for our passion turned career.  We took the plunge and it was the single best thing we could have done. The next step was the bring on an experienced business trained operations manager, Kara. She had run successful incorporated companies in the past and was excited to come alongside what we were doing.

This is where you come in. I see you business owner, unsure how to bring in more clients.  Struggling with figuring out your operations and where to begin/continue with growing your business.  Perhaps you are tired, worn out and need guidance in this birth work profession.  Trust me, in a service profession mostly focused on women, financials are never the first thing we want to deal with. BUT…  I want you to live your passion, support your family and grow a thriving business.

For years now we have had doula after doula emailing/calling/messaging to ask for advice on what the next step is or where to begin.  We’ve enjoyed watching doulas flourish with the knowledge we have shared with them. It’s a passion of ours to elevate birth professions and see changes happen! We want you to succeed and created the life you imagine supporting women, their families and the entire birth community.

Labor and birth can be an uncomfortable and oftentimes unpredictable experience. Becoming educated on the options available to you can make the process seem less scary. The support of a labor doula can bring you reassurance, comfort, and an endless source of information when you need it most.

Doulas focus on providing relevant information, hands on comfort and non-judgmental support throughout your pregnancy, labor and birth.

Hiring the supportive services of a doula will allow you to feel supported and confident, every step of the way.

Supportive Companions

by Heidi

Research has shown that the support of a doula during pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period can help growing families feel more confident and lead to a more satisfying birth experience and enhanced parent and infant bonding. During pregnancy and birth, labor doulas provide education, reassurance, and non-judgmental support. After birth, postpartum doulas provide ongoing education, emotional support and expert advice on all things baby!

The physical comfort measures that a labor doula can provide can help reduce pain and increase comfort during birth.

You don’t need to navigate the uncertainty of labor, birth and parenting a new baby alone. Your doula can be there with you, every step of the way.

Birth Out Loud: In the Philippians Pt.2

by Heidi

Midwife clinic

“The hardest part for my husband I think was not having me around. Being a full time dad. He is a provider so not earning any money brought feeling like he wasn’t providing for his family was hard for sure. He had to sacrifice that a lot those years.
I spend a lot more time alone in Canada than I did in the Philippines. We just live with the 4 of us in the house as opposed to the 20 people rotating in and out so there’s a lot more isolation here. There is also a lot less fear involved in the first year here. I’m finding I have a lot less to worry about with her. In the Philippines death is so common in the first year, it’s so common. That’s why you never celebrate the birth, only the first birthday. So for my son being born in the Philippines, we came from a culture where of course we would celebrate the birth but they didn’t. It just is known that a lot of babies die. So in Canada now there’s this excitement around her that wasn’t there with my son. Because here people expect them to live, and usually they do. It the rural areas, maybe 30-40% don’t make it to their first birthday. Probably most of those are before 6 months.”

Blessings For A Mother

by Heidi

Let me introduce you to Edolbina.  She is the sweetest, seriously guys, the sweetest!  Her spirit is gentle and caring, she loves people and has a fierce passion for birth.  Rightly so that she would choose midwifery for her career and mission.  She enjoys watching her little boy explore the world, loves supporting her husband through life and will be there first one there if someone needs help.  Plus she has a love for iced coffee as much as I do!

Blessing Way Pregnancy

This weekend was a day that we could surprise and pamper her!  Edolbina is expecting her second sweet little babe and we couldn’t be more excited.

Blessing Way Pregnancy

If you aren’t sure what a Mother Blessing (Blessing Way) is then come take a look into our lovely gathering of women.

Blessing Way

Basically, it’s a way to honor, encourage and love on a women at her time prior to giving her.  It’s showing her that she has a strong village of support from the women around her.  Spending time reading beautiful words to her, pampering her with relaxing foot baths, painting affirmation flags for her birth space and so much more!  Oh and of course, delicious food!

Birthing Affirmations

Rather than the usual focus on materialistic items (baby gifts) and games about the baby, this is a time to spend in connection to prepare for birth.  Positive stories are spoken and lots of love given!

Blessing Way

We are wishing you all the best in your beautiful birth Edolbina.

You are a rockstar!

She is there.

by Heidi

She is there. Someone to be the “woman to woman” connection that is so primal and instinctive.  She reminds you that your body is strong and was made for this and that your baby is safe and ready.  She enhances your partner’s ability to be fully present for you and help him alongside this beautiful marathon that is birth.

Doula

She knows you through the hours of prenatal sessions together and knows your desires for birth.  She supports your choices and is there to gently remind you what your options are.

She helps you breath and focus, to go inward and let the tightening’s flow as you ride them out.  She keeps the lights low and the space in the room calm so you can get that good oxytocin flowing.

doula

She reminds you to follow your heart, gut and intuition.

She suggests movements and positions to help your baby move further down, to help you rest and to connect with your partner.  She massages your feet, puts pressure on your back and grabs a cool cloth for your forehead.  She brings you back during transition when you want to close your eyes and are done.

A doula is a woman with experience and knowledge in birth.  She comes along on this journey as a guide and an encouragement.

She is there.

Postpartum Doula: Please Welcome Jennifer!

by Heidi

Yellow Bird Birth is ecstatic to announce that Jennifer will be joining the team starting in January!

She will be our lovely POSTPARTUM Doula and we know you are going to ADORE her!

Postpartum Doula

Hello there! My name is Jennifer and I am a birth/postpartum doula. A little bit about myself first, I love singing, cooking, hiking, snowboarding and all things birth and postpartum.

My love for birth and postpartum began when I had my own three children. Through experiencing three entirely different births and recoveries, I felt a strong pull towards women/parents during these times that ultimately led me to become a Doula. As women venture into the “fourth trimester” they can feel many different emotions, and I strongly feel that this time is so very important to the parent and family. My areas of knowledge are in newborn baby care, breastfeeding/formula feeding, preparing good sleep habits, food sensitive babies, and also babies who tend to have fussy/spirited temperaments. I am excited and honoured to assist you in your journey of parenthood, its an amazing ride!

Meet the Doula: Jaclyn

by Heidi

Welcome to our blog! It’s my turn to share about who I am with you lovely readers.

My name is Jaclyn and I live in the Fraser Valley. I define myself as a wife, mother, and a natural living/birth enthusiast. I met the man of my dreams when I was in my late teens, and 3 years later we were married and falling so deeply in love! Next came the most beautiful little girl, and just recently, a handsome baby boy! My family is my treasure and am daily reminded of how blessed I am to have them…even though they produce endless amounts of dirty dishes and sticky fingers! But I have always desired to have a large family so these 2 littles are just the beginning of many more babies and years of motherhood!Jaclyn Doula Hiking2

I find joy in being outdoors, drinking tea, singing and dancing throughout my house…and car, and in multicoloured/patterned fabrics with which I dress myself, my children, and my home!

My passions are for my faith, family, and for birth! My journey into the birth world as a doula started when I witnessed my sister’s giving birth to their first born babies (4 months apart, t’was a busy year). I was overcome with a love for labouring women and the power they posses. I was also blessed to have a mother who was a doula. She passed on her trust in birth and knowledge of a woman’s power through labouring and raising her babies. I was taught to have confidence in and love myself deeply, something that I feel every woman needs in every area of life.Jaclyn Pregnant

Yellow Bird Birth is truly an adventure for me. When I “grew up”, I had only dreamed of being a wife and mother (which I love as I have said before), but I now I get to pour out my passion for birth into others lives as a doula and placenta encapsulator in Chilliwack and Abbotsford. And I do pour love into placenta prep! I feel called to this work and find great rewards in it. My hope is to change the birth world, to encourage families to stand up for their right’s and desires in maternity care, to show our community how valuable doulas are and how much they are needed, but most of all, to witness families bring their babies earthside safely, peacefully, and joyfully!
